Details
A vulnerability was found in Sun Solaris up to 9.0 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component at Utility. The manipulation of the argument -r with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is integrity. CVE summarizes:
A race condition in the at command for Solaris 2.6 through 9 allows local users to delete arbitrary files via the -r argument with .. (dot dot) sequences in the job name, then modifying the directory structure after at checks permissions to delete the file and before the deletion actually takes place.
The bug was discovered 01/27/2003. The weakness was shared 12/31/2003 by Wojciech Purczynski with isec.pl (Website). The advisory is available at secunia.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2003-1073 since 02/08/2005. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 338 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (11179), Exploit-DB (22203), SecurityFocus (BID 6693†), OSVDB (15142†) and Secunia (SA7960†).
