protobuf-java core/protobuf-java lite up to 3.16.2/3.19.5/3.20.2/3.21.6 Garbage Collection denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in protobuf-java core and protobuf-java lite up to 3.16.2/3.19.5/3.20.2/3.21.6 (Programming Language Software). Affected is an unknown function of the component Garbage Collection Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

A parsing issue with binary data in protobuf-java core and lite versions prior to 3.21.7, 3.20.3, 3.19.6 and 3.16.3 can lead to a denial of service attack. Inputs containing multiple instances of non-repeated embedded messages with repeated or unknown fields causes objects to be converted back-n-forth between mutable and immutable forms, resulting in potentially long garbage collection pauses. We recommend updating to the versions mentioned above.

The weakness was released 10/13/2022 as GHSA-h4h5-3hr4-j3g2. The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2022-3171 since 09/09/2022. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 211155 (Fedora 37 : protobuf (2022-25f35ed634)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 3.16.3, 3.19.6, 3.20.3 or 3.21.7 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (211155). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
