Grafana up to 8.5.13/9.1.7 Plugin signature verification

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Grafana up to 8.5.13/9.1.7. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component Plugin Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a signature verification vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-347. The product does not verify, or incorrectly verifies, the cryptographic signature for data. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Grafana is an open source observability and data visualization platform. Versions prior to 9.1.8 and 8.5.14 are vulnerable to a bypass in the plugin signature verification. An attacker can convince a server admin to download and successfully run a malicious plugin even though unsigned plugins are not allowed. Versions 9.1.8 and 8.5.14 contain a patch for this issue. As a workaround, do not install plugins downloaded from untrusted sources.

The weakness was shared 10/14/2022 as GHSA-rhxj-gh46-jvw8. The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2022-31123 since 05/18/2022. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 224697 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2022-31123), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 8.5.14 or 9.1.8 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com.
