A vulnerability was found in Google Go (Programming Language Software) (the affected version is unknown). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function Reader.Read of the component File Header Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. Reader.Read does not set a limit on the maximum size of file headers. A maliciously crafted archive could cause Read to allocate unbounded amounts of memory, potentially causing resource exhaustion or panics. After fix, Reader.Read limits the maximum size of header blocks to 1 MiB.
The weakness was disclosed 10/15/2022. The advisory is shared at go.dev. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2022-2879 since 08/17/2022. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.
