Details
A vulnerability was found in FreeBSD (Operating System) (the affected version unknown). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown part of the component Kernel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Handlers for *_CFG_PAGE read / write ioctls in the mpr, mps, and mpt drivers allocated a buffer of a caller-specified size, but copied to it a fixed size header. Other heap content would be overwritten if the specified size was too small. Users with access to the mpr, mps or mpt device node may overwrite heap data, potentially resulting in privilege escalation. Note that the device node is only accessible to root and members of the operator group.
The weakness was published 10/18/2022. The advisory is shared for download at zerodayinitiative.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2022-23086 since 01/10/2022.
