Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in GNU MPlayer up to 1.0pre7try2 (Multimedia Player Software). This issue affects an unknown part in the library libmpdemux/aviheader.c of the component AVI/ASF Header Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple integer overflows in MPlayer 1.0pre7try2 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service and trigger heap-based buffer overflows via (1) a certain ASF file handled by asfheader.c that causes the asf_descrambling function to be passed a negative integer after the conversion from a char to an int or (2) an AVI file with a crafted wLongsPerEntry or nEntriesInUse value in the indx chunk, which is handled in aviheader.c.
The bug was discovered 03/29/2006. The weakness was disclosed 03/29/2006 by xfocus with XFOCUS Security Team (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.grok.org.uk. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-1502 since 03/29/2006. The attack needs to be done within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21316 (GLSA-200605-01 : MPlayer: Heap-based buffer overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
