A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Active PHP Bookmarks 1.1.01 (Programming Language Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the file add_bookmark.php. The manipulation of the argument auth_user_id with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. add_bookmark.php in Active PHP Bookmarks (APB) 1.1.01 allows remote attackers to add arbitrary bookmarks as other users using a modified auth_user_id parameter.
The bug was discovered 01/06/2003. The weakness was disclosed 12/31/2003 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2003-1255 since 11/16/2005. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 359 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:add_bookmark.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11012 (Active PHP Bookmarks Arbitrary Bookmark Addition Vulnerability).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (11011), SecurityFocus (BID 6546†), OSVDB (59622†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-13629†). The entry VDB-21186 is pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
