Sun Solaris 2.6/7.0/8.0/9.0 ld.so.1 stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Sun Solaris 2.6/7.0/8.0/9.0 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the file ld.so.1. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the runtime linker, ld.so.1, on Solaris 2.6 through 9 allows local users to gain root privileges via a long LD_PRELOAD environment variable.

The bug was discovered 07/29/2003. The weakness was disclosed 07/29/2003 by Jouko Pynnonen with iDEFENSE (Website). The advisory is shared for download at idefense.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2003-0609 since 07/28/2003. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C and been published 2 years after the advisory. The exploit is available at downloads.securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sunsolve.sun.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (12755), Exploit-DB (114), SecurityFocus (BID 8305†), OSVDB (8722†) and Secunia (SA9388†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
