Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Samba up to 4.17.1 (File Transfer Software). This affects an unknown function of the component Wide Link Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
A symlink following vulnerability was found in Samba, where a user can create a symbolic link that will make 'smbd' escape the configured share path. This flaw allows a remote user with access to the exported part of the file system under a share via SMB1 unix extensions or NFS to create symlinks to files outside the 'smbd' configured share path and gain access to another restricted server's filesystem.
The weakness was shared 10/29/2022. It is possible to read the advisory at samba.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2022-3592. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
