You should upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability was found in multipath-tools up to 0.9.1. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the file /dev/shm of the component multipathd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
multipath-tools 0.7.7 through 0.9.x before 0.9.2 allows local users to obtain root access, as exploited in conjunction with CVE-2022-41974. Local users able to access /dev/shm can change symlinks in multipathd due to incorrect symlink handling, which could lead to controlled file writes outside of the /dev/shm directory. This could be used indirectly for local privilege escalation to root.
The weakness was published 10/31/2022. It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2022-41973 since 09/30/2022. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 236712 (Alibaba Cloud Linux 3 : 0066: device-mapper-multipath (ALINUX3-SA-2023:0066)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 0.9.2 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (236712) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2023-1185). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
