Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in NTFS-3G. Affected is an unknown function of the component NTFS Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

A buffer overflow was discovered in NTFS-3G before 2022.10.3. Crafted metadata in an NTFS image can cause code execution. A local attacker can exploit this if the ntfs-3g binary is setuid root. A physically proximate attacker can exploit this if NTFS-3G software is configured to execute upon attachment of an external storage device.

The weakness was shared 11/07/2022. The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2022-40284 since 09/08/2022. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 211178 (Fedora 37 : ntfs-3g (2022-243616c548)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
