A vulnerability was found in Netgear FM114P 1.4 Beta Release 17 (Router Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the file netgear.cfg of the component Web Configuration Interface. The manipulation of the argument port with the input value %2e%2e%2f leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in the web configuration interface in Netgear FM114P 1.4 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files, such as the netgear.cfg coniguration file, via a hex-encoded (%2e%2e%2f) ../ (dot dot slash) in the port parameter.
The weakness was released 12/31/2003 (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2003-1427 since 10/19/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
