A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions 2002. This issue affects an unknown function. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in _vti_bin/_vti_adm/fpadmdll.dll in Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 and SharePoint Team Services allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML, then leverage the attack to execute arbitrary programs or create new accounts, via the (1) operation, (2) command, and (3) name parameters.

The weakness was published 04/11/2006 by Esteban Martínez Fayó as MS06-017 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-0015 since 11/09/2005. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

After 1 days, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21247 (MS06-017: FrontPage fpadmdll.dll Multiple Parameter XSS (917627)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86739 (FrontPage Server Extensions Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability (MS06-017)).

Applying the patch MS06-017 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 7029.
