A vulnerability has been found in FreeRDP up to 2.8.x and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component Drive Channel Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
FreeRDP is a free remote desktop protocol library and clients. Affected versions of FreeRDP are missing path canonicalization and base path check for `drive` channel. A malicious server can trick a FreeRDP based client to read files outside the shared directory. This issue has been addressed in version 2.9.0 and all users are advised to upgrade. Users unable to upgrade should not use the `/drive`, `/drives` or `+home-drive` redirection switch.
The weakness was disclosed 11/17/2022 as GHSA-c5xq-8v35-pffg. The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2022-39347 since 09/02/2022. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 211437 (Fedora 37 : freerdp (2022-076b1c9978)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 2.9.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 027424c2c6c0991cb9c22f9511478229c9b17e5d is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
