Details
A vulnerability was found in Samba up to 4.15.11/4.16.6/4.17.2 on 32-bit (File Transfer Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component Kerberos Library/AD DC. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
PAC parsing in MIT Kerberos 5 (aka krb5) before 1.19.4 and 1.20.x before 1.20.1 has integer overflows that may lead to remote code execution (in KDC, kadmind, or a GSS or Kerberos application server) on 32-bit platforms (which have a resultant heap-based buffer overflow), and cause a denial of service on other platforms. This occurs in krb5_pac_parse in lib/krb5/krb/pac.c. Heimdal before 7.7.1 has "a similar bug."
The weakness was disclosed 11/17/2022. It is possible to read the advisory at samba.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2022-42898. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 207970 (Oracle Linux 7 : krb5 (ELSA-2024-5076)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 4.15.12, 4.16.7 or 4.17.3 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (207970). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
