Details
A vulnerability was found in Node.js 18 (JavaScript Library). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function SecretKeyGenTraits::DoKeyGen of the file src/crypto/crypto_keygen.cc. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a weak prng vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-338. The product uses a Pseudo-Random Number Generator (PRNG) in a security context, but the PRNG's algorithm is not cryptographically strong. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
A weak randomness in WebCrypto keygen vulnerability exists in Node.js 18 due to a change with EntropySource() in SecretKeyGenTraits::DoKeyGen() in src/crypto/crypto_keygen.cc. There are two problems with this: 1) It does not check the return value, it assumes EntropySource() always succeeds, but it can (and sometimes will) fail. 2) The random data returned byEntropySource() may not be cryptographically strong and therefore not suitable as keying material.
The weakness was released 12/06/2022. The advisory is shared for download at hackerone.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2022-35255 since 07/06/2022. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.001.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 216256 (Oracle Linux 8 : nodejs:20 (ELSA-2025-1351)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (216256). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
