A vulnerability was found in NetBSD up to 3.0 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function ioctl. The manipulation of the argument SIOCGIFALIAS with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
The kernel in NetBSD-current before September 28, 2005 allows local users to cause a denial of service (system crash) by using the SIOCGIFALIAS ioctl to gather information on a non-existent alias of a network interface, which causes a NULL pointer dereference.
The weakness was published 04/13/2006 by Sean (Website). The advisory is available at ftp.netbsd.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-1797 since 04/17/2006. The attack can only be done within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at netbsd.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
