Google Go net-http memory allocation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Google Go. This affects an unknown part of the component net-http. The manipulation leads to memory allocation. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2022-41717. Remote exploitation of the attack is possible. No exploit is available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Google Go (Programming Language Software) (affected version unknown) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component net-http. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

An attacker can cause excessive memory growth in a Go server accepting HTTP/2 requests. HTTP/2 server connections contain a cache of HTTP header keys sent by the client. While the total number of entries in this cache is capped, an attacker sending very large keys can cause the server to allocate approximately 64 MiB per open connection.

The weakness was published 12/09/2022. It is possible to read the advisory at go.dev. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2022-41717 since 09/28/2022. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/30/2025).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 236572 (Alibaba Cloud Linux 3 : 0071: git-lfs (ALINUX3-SA-2023:0071)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (236572) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2023-0479). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
