Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in GitHub Enterprise Server 3.7.0 (Bug Tracking Software). Affected is an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
An improper limitation of a pathname to a restricted directory vulnerability was identified in GitHub Enterprise Server that enabled remote code execution. A check was added within Pages to ensure the working directory is clean before unpacking new content to prevent an arbitrary file overwrite bug. This vulnerability affected only version 3.7.0 of GitHub Enterprise Server and was fixed in version 3.7.1. This vulnerability was reported via the GitHub Bug Bounty program.
The weakness was published 12/14/2022. The advisory is shared for download at docs.github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2022-46255 since 11/28/2022. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
Upgrading to version 3.7.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at docs.github.com.
