Samba up to 4.15.12 AD DC inadequate encryption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Samba up to 4.15.12 (File Transfer Software). This affects an unknown part of the component AD DC. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a inadequate encryption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-326. The product stores or transmits sensitive data using an encryption scheme that is theoretically sound, but is not strong enough for the level of protection required. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Since the Windows Kerberos RC4-HMAC Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability was disclosed by Microsoft on Nov 8 2022 and per RFC8429 it is assumed that rc4-hmac is weak, Vulnerable Samba Active Directory DCs will issue rc4-hmac encrypted tickets despite the target server supporting better encryption (eg aes256-cts-hmac-sha1-96).

The weakness was shared 12/19/2022. It is possible to read the advisory at samba.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2022-45141. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 239842 (TencentOS Server 4: samba (TSSA-2025:0016)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 4.15.13 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (239842). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
