A vulnerability was found in HP Web Jetadmin 7.5.2546 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the file setinfo.hts. The manipulation of the argument setinclude with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in setinfo.hts in HP Web Jetadmin 7.5.2546 allows remote authenticated attackers to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the setinclude parameter.
The weakness was released 03/24/2004 by wirepair (Website). The advisory is available at marc.info. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-1857 since 05/04/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

It is possible to mitigate the problem by adding an authentication mechanism. A possible mitigation has been published 7 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
