A vulnerability was found in Coppermine Photo Gallery 1.2.2b (Photo Gallery Software). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the file modules.php. The manipulation of the argument startdir with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in modules.php in Coppermine Photo Gallery 1.2.2b and 1.2.0 RC4 allows remote attackers with administrative privileges to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the startdir parameter.

The weakness was released 04/29/2004 by Janek Vind with waraxe (Website). The advisory is shared for download at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-1986 since 05/04/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation.
