A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5/6.0 (Web Browser). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code of the component BMP Image Handler. Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 and 6.0 allocates memory based on the memory size written in the BMP file instead of the actual BMP file size, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a small BMP file with has a large memory size.
The issue has been introduced in 07/08/2000. The weakness was published 04/11/2004 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at marc.theaimsgroup.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-1922. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation.
