Summary
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Host. Impacted is an unknown function of the component TCP Implementation. Executing a manipulation can lead to denial of service. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2004-1060. Furthermore, an exploit is available. A patch should be applied to remediate this issue.
Details
A vulnerability has been found in Host (affected version not known) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component TCP Implementation. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple TCP/IP and ICMP implementations, when using Path MTU (PMTU) discovery (PMTUD), allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (network throughput reduction for TCP connections) via forged ICMP ("Fragmentation Needed and Don t Fragment was Set") packets with a low next-hop MTU value, aka the "Path MTU discovery attack." NOTE: CVE-2004-0790, CVE-2004-0791, and CVE-2004-1060 have been SPLIT based on different attacks; CVE-2005-0065, CVE-2005-0066, CVE-2005-0067, and CVE-2005-0068 are related identifiers that are SPLIT based on the underlying vulnerability. While CVE normally SPLITs based on vulnerability, the attack-based identifiers exist due to the variety and number of affected implementations and solutions that address the attacks instead of the underlying vulnerabilities.
The weakness was published 04/12/2004 by Fernando Gont as MS05-019 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-1060 since 11/23/2004. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 48985 (Crafted ICMP Messages Can Cause Denial of Service - Cisco Systems), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CISCO. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 82058 (ICMP Based TCP Reset Denial of Service Vulnerability).
Applying the patch MS05-019 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12577.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (20257), Exploit-DB (25388), Tenable (48985), SecurityFocus (BID 13124†) and Secunia (SA16106†).
