KDE Konqueror up to 3.1.2 Cookie privileges management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in KDE Konqueror up to 3.1.2 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component Cookie Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Konqueror in KDE 3.1.3 and earlier (kdelibs) allows remote attackers to bypass intended cookie access restrictions on a web application via "%2e%2e" (encoded dot dot) directory traversal sequences in a URL, which causes Konqueror to send the cookie outside the specified URL subsets, e.g. to a vulnerable application that runs on the same server as the target application.

The bug was discovered . The weakness was presented 04/15/2004 with Corsaire (Website). The advisory is shared for download at redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2003-0592. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 12487 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14121 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : kdelibs (MDKSA-2004:022)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115386 (KDE Konqueror Cookie Domain Validation Vulnerability).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (15424), Tenable (14121), SecurityFocus (BID 9841†), OSVDB (4188†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-12530†). See VDB-555, VDB-21747, VDB-21749 and VDB-21750 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
