Details
A vulnerability was found in isag (unknown version). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The isag utility, which processes sysstat data, allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on temporary files, a different vulnerability than CAN-2004-0107.
The bug was discovered 03/10/2004. The weakness was released 04/15/2004 by Alan Cox (Website). The advisory is shared at redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-0108. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15297 (Debian DSA-460-1 : sysstat - insecure temporary file), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (15437), Tenable (15297), SecurityFocus (BID 9844†), OSVDB (4196†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-22139†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
