FastCGI 2.4.0 Connection resource consumption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

It is advisable to implement a patch to correct this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in FastCGI 2.4.0 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the component Connection Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

FastCGI (aka fcgi and libfcgi) 2.4.0 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (segmentation fault and crash) via a large number of connections.

The weakness was disclosed 01/08/2023 as GASA-2015-0184. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-6687 since 02/07/2015. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83250 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : fcgi (MDVSA-2015:226)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (100696) and Tenable (83250). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
