Details
A vulnerability was found in Apache HTTP Server up to 1.3.29/2.0.48 (Web Server) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the component Cygwin Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in Apache 1.3.29 and earlier, and Apache 2.0.48 and earlier, when running on Cygwin, allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a URL containing "..%5C" (dot dot encoded backslash) sequences.
The bug was discovered 02/24/2004. The weakness was disclosed 04/15/2004 by Jeremy Bae (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at marc.info. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-0173. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 51 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86651 (Apache Cygwin Directory Traversal Vulnerability).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (15293), Exploit-DB (23751), SecurityFocus (BID 9733†), OSVDB (4037†) and Secunia (SA10962†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
