A vulnerability was found in Insteon Hub 1012 (Network Management Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component PubNub Message Handler. The manipulation of the argument grp with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Multiple exploitable buffer overflow vulnerabilities exist in the PubNub message handler for the "cc" channel of Insteon Hub running firmware version 1012. Specially crafted commands sent through the PubNub service can cause a stack-based buffer overflow overwriting arbitrary data. An attacker should send an authenticated HTTP request to trigger this vulnerability. In cmd l_bt, at 0x9d016104, the value for the `grp` key is copied using `strcpy` to the buffer at `$sp+0x1b4`.This buffer is 8 bytes large, sending anything longer will cause a buffer overflow.
The weakness was released 01/12/2023 as TALOS-2017-0483. The advisory is available at talosintelligence.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-16265 since 10/31/2017.
