Details
A vulnerability was found in Insteon Hub 1012 (Network Management Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown function of the component PubNub Message Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple exploitable buffer overflow vulnerabilities exist in the PubNub message handler for the "cc" channel of Insteon Hub running firmware version 1012. Specially crafted commands sent through the PubNub service can cause a stack-based buffer overflow overwriting arbitrary data. An attacker should send an authenticated HTTP request to trigger this vulnerability. In cmd s_auth, at 0x9d015430, the value for the `usr` key is copied using `strcpy` to the buffer at `$sp+0x290`.This buffer is 32 bytes large, sending anything longer will cause a buffer overflow.
The weakness was released 01/12/2023 as TALOS-2017-0483. The advisory is shared at talosintelligence.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-16259 since 10/31/2017. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 02/04/2023).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
