Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in OpenBSD 3.4 (Operating System). Affected is some unknown functionality of the component isakmpd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple memory leaks in isakmpd in OpenBSD 3.4 and earlier allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory exhaustion) via certain ISAKMP packets, as demonstrated by the Striker ISAKMP Protocol Test Suite.
The bug was discovered 03/17/2004. The weakness was presented 05/04/2004 by FIRST as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2004-0222 since 03/13/2004. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 14 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19096 (FreeBSD : isakmpd payload handling denial-of-service vulnerabilities (b7cb488c-8349-11d8-a41f-0020ed76ef5a)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 31466.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (15519), Tenable (19096), SecurityFocus (BID 10028†), OSVDB (5701†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-8698†).
