A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.5.0.2 (Web Browser). This affects the function focus of the component Javascript. Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.2, when designMode is enabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via certain Javascript that is not properly handled by the contentWindow.focus method in an iframe, which causes a reference to a deleted controller context object. NOTE: this was originally claimed to be a buffer overflow in (1) js320.dll and (2) xpcom_core.dll, but the vendor disputes this claim.
The bug was discovered 04/23/2006. The weakness was disclosed 04/25/2006 by Martijn Wargers (splices and spiffomatic64) with Securident Technologies (Website). Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at getfirefox.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 16024. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4401.
