A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Windows Server 2003/XP (Operating System). This issue affects an unknown part of the file dvdupgrd.htm of the component Help/Support Center. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Help and Support Center in Microsoft Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 SP1 does not properly validate HCP URLs, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code, as demonstrated using certain hcp:// URLs that access the DVD Upgrade capability (dvdupgrd.htm).
The weakness was shared 06/14/2004 by Donnie Werner as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-0199 since 03/10/2004. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
By approaching the search of inurl:dvdupgrd.htm it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 12235 (MS04-015: Microsoft Help Center Remote Code Execution (840374)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90111 (Microsoft Windows Help and Support Center URL Validation Buffer Overflow Vulnerability (MS04-015)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2802.
