Redis up to 6.0.16/6.2.8/7.0.7 integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Redis up to 6.0.16/6.2.8/7.0.7. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

Redis is an in-memory database that persists on disk. Authenticated users issuing specially crafted `SETRANGE` and `SORT(_RO)` commands can trigger an integer overflow, resulting with Redis attempting to allocate impossible amounts of memory and abort with an out-of-memory (OOM) panic. The problem is fixed in Redis versions 7.0.8, 6.2.9 and 6.0.17. Users are advised to upgrade. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability.

The weakness was presented 01/21/2023 as GHSA-mrcw-fhw9-fj8j. The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2022-35977 since 07/15/2022. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 211963 (Debian dla-3973 : redis - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.0.17, 6.2.9 or 7.0.8 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com. Applying the patch 1ec82e6e97e1db06a72ca505f9fbf6b981f31ef7 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (211963). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
