A vulnerability was found in X.org X11 6.7.0/6.8/6.8.1/6.9 (Windowing System Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component Xrender Extension. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Buffer overflow in the X render (Xrender) extension in X.org X server 6.8.0 up to allows attackers to cause a denial of service (crash), as demonstrated by the (1) XRenderCompositeTriStrip and (2) XRenderCompositeTriFan requests in the rendertest from XCB xcb/xcb-demo, which leads to an incorrect memory allocation due to a typo in an expression that uses a "&" instead of a "*" operator. NOTE: the subject line of the original announcement used an incorrect CVE number for this issue.
The bug was discovered 05/02/2006. The weakness was shared 05/03/2006 with X11 Team (Website). The advisory is available at lists.freedesktop.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-1526 since 03/30/2006. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21996 (CentOS 4 : xorg-x11 (CESA-2006:0451)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
