Details
A vulnerability was found in PHP (Programming Language Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function zend_hash_init. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The memory_limit functionality in PHP 4.x up to 4.3.7, and 5.x up to 5.0.0RC3, under certain conditions such as when register_globals is enabled, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by triggering a memory_limit abort during execution of the zend_hash_init function and overwriting a HashTable destructor pointer before the initialization of key data structures is complete.
The bug was discovered 06/26/2004. The weakness was released 07/14/2004 by Stefan Esser (e-matters) (Website). The advisory is shared at security.e-matters.de. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-0594 since 06/23/2004. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C and been published 5 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at felinemenace.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 18 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18773 (Slackware 10.0 / 8.1 / 9.0 / 9.1 / current : PHP (SSA:2004-202-01)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Slackware Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12088 (PHP Strip_Tags() Function Bypass and Heap Overflow Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 7 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 16078. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2947.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (16693), Exploit-DB (660), Tenable (18773), SecurityFocus (BID 10725†) and OSVDB (7870†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-21942. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
