A vulnerability was found in mod_ssl up to 2.8.18. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function mod_proxy of the file ssl_engine_log.c. Format string vulnerability in the mod_proxy hook functions function in ssl_engine_log.c in mod_ssl before 2.8.19 for Apache before 1.3.31 may allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary messages via format string specifiers in certain log messages for HTTPS that are handled by the ssl_log function.
The bug was discovered 07/16/2004. The weakness was published 07/16/2004 by virulent as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 15980. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 31469.
