A vulnerability was found in GNU Tar up to 1.34. It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function from_header of the file list.c of the component V7 Archive Handler. GNU Tar through 1.34 has a one-byte out-of-bounds read that results in use of uninitialized memory for a conditional jump. Exploitation to change the flow of control has not been demonstrated. The issue occurs in from_header in list.c via a V7 archive in which mtime has approximately 11 whitespace characters.
The weakness was disclosed 01/30/2023. The advisory is shared for download at savannah.gnu.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2022-48303 since 01/30/2023. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
