A vulnerability has been found in PHP up to 4.3.1 (Programming Language Software) and classified as problematic. Integer signedness error in emalloc() function for PHP before 4.3.2 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) and possibly execute arbitrary code via negative arguments to functions such as (1) socket_recv, (2) socket_recvfrom, and possibly other functions.

The weakness was disclosed 03/25/2003 by Sir Mordred as confirmed posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2003-0166. The attack can only be done within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11468 (PHP socket_iovec_alloc() Function Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
