TRENDnet TV-IP651WI up to 1.07.01 Firmware Update channel accessible

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in TRENDnet TV-IP651WI up to 1.07.01. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the component Firmware Update Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a channel accessible vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-300. The product does not adequately verify the identity of actors at both ends of a communication channel, or does not adequately ensure the integrity of the channel, in a way that allows the channel to be accessed or influenced by an actor that is not an endpoint. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The use of the cyclic redundancy check (CRC) algorithm for integrity check during firmware update makes TRENDnet TV-IP651WI Network Camera firmware version v1.07.01 and earlier vulnerable to firmware modification attacks. An attacker can conduct a man-in-the-middle (MITM) attack to modify the new firmware image and bypass the checksum verification.

The weakness was shared 02/02/2023. The advisory is shared at hackmd.io. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-23120 since 01/11/2023. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/04/2023). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1557 for this issue.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
