pesign systemd Service /etc/pki/pesign symlink

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as critical has been identified in pesign. This impacts an unknown function of the file /etc/pki/pesign of the component systemd Service. Such manipulation leads to symlink. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2022-3560. The attack may be launched remotely. There is no exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in pesign (unknown version) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the file /etc/pki/pesign of the component systemd Service. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

A flaw was found in pesign. The pesign package provides a systemd service used to start the pesign daemon. This service unit runs a script to set ACLs for /etc/pki/pesign and /run/pesign directories to grant access privileges to users in the 'pesign' group. However, the script doesn't check for symbolic links. This could allow an attacker to gain access to privileged files and directories via a path traversal attack.

The weakness was shared 02/03/2023. The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2022-3560 since 10/17/2022. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
