A vulnerability was found in Business Objects Crystal Enterprise 1.2. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the file crystalimagehandler.aspx. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. The bug was discovered 04/20/2004. The weakness was disclosed 08/06/2004 by Moran Surf and Amichai Shulman with Imperva (Website). The advisory is shared for download at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-0204 since 03/11/2004. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90113 (Crystal Reports Web Viewer Information Disclosure/Denial of Service (MS04-017)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2581. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2840.
