A vulnerability has been found in SquirrelMail up to 3.x (Mail Client Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component change_passwd Plugin. The manipulation of the argument chpasswd with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. buffer overflow in the chpasswd command in the change_passwd plugin before 4.0 as used in squirrelmail allows local users to gain root privileges via a long user name.
The weakness was disclosed 08/06/2004 by Matias Neiff (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at marc.theaimsgroup.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-0524 since 06/03/2004.
