Details
A vulnerability was found in cryptography on Python (affected version unknown). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function Cipher.update_into. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a unusual condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-754. The product does not check or incorrectly checks for unusual or exceptional conditions that are not expected to occur frequently during day to day operation of the product. Impacted is integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
cryptography is a package designed to expose cryptographic primitives and recipes to Python developers. In affected versions `Cipher.update_into` would accept Python objects which implement the buffer protocol, but provide only immutable buffers. This would allow immutable objects (such as `bytes`) to be mutated, thus violating fundamental rules of Python and resulting in corrupted output. This now correctly raises an exception. This issue has been present since `update_into` was originally introduced in cryptography 1.8.
The weakness was disclosed 02/08/2023 as GHSA-w7pp-m8wf-vj6r. The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2023-23931 since 01/19/2023. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 209185 (Debian dla-3922 : python-cryptography-doc - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com.
