Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in FreeBSD (Operating System) (version now known). This issue affects some unknown processing of the component GELI. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a missing encryption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-311. The product does not encrypt sensitive or critical information before storage or transmission. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
When GELI reads a key file from standard input, it does not reuse the key file to initialize multiple providers at once resulting in the second and subsequent devices silently using a NULL key as the user key file. If a user only uses a key file without a user passphrase, the master key is encrypted with an empty key file allowing trivial recovery of the master key.
The weakness was disclosed 02/08/2023. The advisory is shared at security.FreeBSD.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-0751 since 02/08/2023. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.
