A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Sophos Anti-Virus up to 4.04/5.2.0 (Anti-Malware Software). This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component CAB Archive Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Multiple Sophos Anti-Virus products, including Anti-Virus for Windows 5.x before 5.2.1 and 4.x before 4.05, when cabinet file inspection is enabled, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a CAB file with "invalid folder count values," which leads to heap corruption.
The bug was discovered 05/08/2006. The weakness was disclosed 05/09/2006 with Zero Day Initiative (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at sophos.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-0994 since 03/03/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sophos.com. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 6504. In this case the pattern MSCF is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4185.
