Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in GSS-NTLMSSP up to 1.1.x. This affects the function gss_accept_sec_context of the component NTLM Authentication. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
GSS-NTLMSSP is a mechglue plugin for the GSSAPI library that implements NTLM authentication. Prior to version 1.2.0, a memory leak can be triggered when parsing usernames which can trigger a denial-of-service. The domain portion of a username may be overridden causing an allocated memory area the size of the domain name to be leaked. An attacker can leak memory via the main `gss_accept_sec_context` entry point, potentially causing a denial-of-service. This issue is fixed in version 1.2.0.
The weakness was shared 02/14/2023 as GHSA-mfm4-6g58-jw74. The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2023-25566 since 02/07/2023. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.
Upgrading to version 1.2.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com. Applying the patch 8660fb16474054e692a596e9c79670cd4d3954f4 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
