F-Secure Anti-Virus up to 2004 LHA Archive path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in F-Secure Anti-Virus up to 2004. This impacts an unknown function of the component LHA Archive Handler. Performing a manipulation with the input //absolute/path results in path traversal. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2004-0235. Furthermore, there is an exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in F-Secure Anti-Virus up to 2004 (Anti-Malware Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects some unknown processing of the component LHA Archive Handler. The manipulation with the input value //absolute/path leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple directory traversal vulnerabilities in LHA 1.14 allow remote attackers or local users to create arbitrary files via an LHA archive containing filenames with (1) .. sequences or (2) absolute pathnames with double leading slashes ("//absolute/path").

The bug was discovered 04/30/2004. The weakness was shared 08/18/2004 by Ulf Harnhammar (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.grok.org.uk. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2004-0235 since 03/17/2004. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 110 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 12561 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 31053.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (16013), Tenable (12561), SecurityFocus (BID 10243†), OSVDB (5755†) and Secunia (SA11510†). The entries VDB-1287 and VDB-22118 are related to this item. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
