A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Mozilla up to 1.7 (Web Browser). Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the component CA Certificate Import Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Mozilla 1.5 through 1.7 allows a CA certificate to be imported even when their DN is the same as that of the built-in CA root certificate, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service to SSL pages because the malicious certificate is treated as invalid.
The weakness was disclosed 08/18/2004 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-0758 since 08/02/2004. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14668 (Mozilla Multiple Browsers CA Certificate SSL Page DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115047 (Sun Solaris Mozilla Multiple Vulnerabilities).
