A vulnerability was found in Nextcloud Server 23.0.11/24.0.7/25.0.1 (Cloud Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function Folder::getFullPath. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Nextcloud server is a self hosted home cloud product. In affected versions the `OC\Files\Node\Folder::getFullPath()` function was validating and normalizing the string in the wrong order. The function is used in the `newFile()` and `newFolder()` items, which may allow to creation of paths outside of ones own space and overwriting data from other users with crafted paths. This issue has been addressed in versions 25.0.2, 24.0.8, and 23.0.12. Users are advised to upgrade. There are no known workarounds for this issue.
The weakness was published 02/22/2023 as GHSA-273v-9h7x-p68v. The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2023-25579 since 02/07/2023. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
Upgrading to version 23.0.12, 24.0.8 or 25.0.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
